Room Measuring Guide for Carpets & Vinyl Flooring

Before you start, you will need:

  • Pencil / Pen & Paper
  • Tape Measure
  • Calculator
  • Ruler

Lets get started.

  1. Draw a rough plan of your room. It doesn't need to be to scale, but include all walls, bays, alcoves and doorways.
  2. Measure the exact length and width of your room at the widest points. A good tip is to look at your ceiling for the widest points as sometimes alcoves or a drop back can be missed if furniture is obscuring your view.
  3. Now you have the exact measurements of your room. Add at least 10cm to both length and width measurements. This will allow for fitting, cutting and any room irregularities. (Where a wall can run out of square)
  4. Ordering. Carpets have a roll width of either 4 or 5 metres. Vinyl has a roll width of 2, 3 and 4 metres. The roll width is fixed and cannot be changed. (Please note, only some carpets are available in 5 metre widths) Your choice of roll length can be anything from 1 metre to 30 metres.

Example: In the above example you would order a carpet or a vinyl in a 4 metre width and a roll length of 5.9 metres. Carpet or vinyl ordered: (5.9 x 4m)
